Jeremy hadn’t noticed
his friend’s eyebrows knit together, for his attention was once again drawn outside. He peered out the window as a few students said goodbye to their mothers - mostly - and a few to fathers and older siblings who had had their fair share - meaning all seven years - of Hogwarts {or some other country equivalent}. Now, rather unpleasantly, this brought that one nagging thought up from his subconscious, all the way to his mainstream of thoughts as quickly as a commuter in a speedy elevator - faster than you could say {and spell correctly, for that matter} anti-disestablishmentarianism. This rather annoying, melancholy thought was always there in his head, ever since that one dreadful morning when he woke to the misery that was basically: “Half of my immediate family has been killed wrongly.” And, although most children would have {since their time of speech} given anything to have their sibling go away, being an only who had had a caring, older brother {the occasional altercation, yes} was not all it was fantasized to be.
The thought swirled around like a memory cast into a pensieve; how Jeremy so longed to have his family altogether once again… His train of thought, mercifully, was cut off {and hopefully sent down broken train tracks, off a cliff and into a river, never to be seen again} by Nathan talking once again. What a pitiful feeling that thought had brought for the sudden speech to have been as savoury as a voice through years of silence instead of just a few minutes. In fact, Jeremy’s throat had dried considerably and that simple line had such a great effect on him like hands being removed from a choke-hold. He turned to his friend with ever so cheeky a grin. His friend had been working all summer {and a bit beyond} on that book so for it to finally be finished was a great joy.
”For that, a couple of chocolate frogs to go ‘round are in order! And I hope I get a chance to read it over.” said he, with no trace of a bad thought whatsoever. Maybe the train of thought did crash and kill all passengers. They would probably come bad and sleep in his mind once more, but in the meantime…
At the mere mention of that boy - no matter how he had tried to muffle it, Jeremy was a very analytical person - Jer nose twitched with such annoyance. He hated that kid in a way no other thought possible. No. No one thought such resent could seep out of that quiet mama’s boy. It wasn’t, contrary to popular belief, just because of how he treated girls - that was his own business and Jer felt none obliged to get into such unnecessary matters - but it went far deeper than that. And what may have been just a small, unnoticeable curb of speech to the other, it was the lit match to a series of rather explosive events.
He had opened his mouth to respond to that when that stupid kid burst into the compartment, addressing Jed as if there wasn’t the slightest bit of disagreement in the world. Worst of all, he acted as if they were good buddies. Arctic eyes caught the faintest glimmer of a challenge in the darker eyes in front of him. So, this was just going to be a game, hm? Well, as Jeremy had shown in every competition against them, he was very good at games.
The door, as swiftly as it closed, opened once again to reveal a more… Valued… Somebody. Poor Roxi. Could she have come at a worse time? Probably so because Jed couldn’t bear to take out his anger on anyone undeserving of it. As if her presence had dumped a cooler of ice on him, he cooled off quick. ”Hey, Roxi.” He said, shooting her a warm smile she should have been used to then. His blue eyes were dancing with relief. Her ginger cat almost immediately crawled over, slinkering into his lap. He pet the cat with a smile, keeping the feline content so as not to run away into other parts of the train. ”No harm done.”
